The pretty girl with windswept hair on this week's cover of LIFE is 19–year–old Maree Helniken, a senior at Armstrong Junior College; Savannah, Ga. Maree is one of three Savannah girls who volunteered to pose in cotton dresses for LIFE. A picture of the other two girls appears on page 62. None of them had ever posed for fashion photographs before. In a note to LIFE's editors, Maree modestly wrote: "I hope the time and energy you spent trying to make an amateur resemble a professional will not have been wasted."
