Description
LIFE Magazine – September 2, 1946 features a nostalgic Cape Cod “Vacation’s End” cover, showing children at the close of summer. The cover subjects were Michael Foster and Marcia Perry, photographed at Cotuit on Cape Cod. Inside, LIFE balances that end-of-summer mood with a wide survey of postwar America and world affairs, including growing international trouble spots, China’s political crisis and the condition of the U.S. armed forces.
The issue also includes an especially strong sports section marking the climax of the summer season, with figures including Ben Hogan, Jackie Robinson and Ann Curtis. Other notable features cover Oak Ridge and the atomic age, retiring Treasury investigator Elmer Irey, mountain glaciers in Alaska, new hay fever drugs, and reading tests used to help struggling students.
Entertainment and culture are well represented, too. LIFE covers the film The Killers and prints the Ernest Hemingway story behind it, presents a portrait of Dorothy McGuire by Paul Clemens, revisits the golden age of the Mississippi through old prints, attends a harp festival in Maine and closes with LIFE Visits Cape Cod. It is a broad, highly visual snapshot of American life in the first full summer after World War II.
