Description
The October 15, 1951 issue of LIFE Magazine features Zsa Zsa Gabor on the cover at the beginning of her rise to national fame. LIFE introduced her to millions of readers as the glamorous Hungarian-born sister of television star Eva Gabor, highlighting Zsa Zsa’s emerging career in television and her larger-than-life personality. At the time, she was appearing on the West Coast television program Bachelor’s Haven, years before she became one of the most recognizable celebrity figures of the 1950s and 1960s.
Inside, this issue offers a particularly broad mix of Cold War politics, military history, boxing, science, photography and American life. A major article examines The Forrestal Diaries, the private record of former Secretary of Defense James Forrestal, while another profiles Jim Norris, then one of the most powerful figures in professional boxing. LIFE also covers Britain’s looming election, Confederate symbolism, Douglas Aircraft labor unrest, the reconstruction of Columbus’s Santa Maria, and remarkable early photographs of Earth taken from 135 miles above the planet.
Photographic essays by Jack Breed and Lisa Larsen, along with a Philippe Halsman feature marking his 51st LIFE cover, give the issue additional appeal for collectors of classic LIFE photography.
