The Munich Olympics Massacre — LIFE Magazine, September 15, 1972

And beneath them:
From this small Israeli team, 11 would die.
The photograph had been taken before the world knew what was coming. After September 5, 1972, it became something very different—a record of men walking unknowingly toward one of the defining acts of terrorism of the twentieth century.
The Munich Massacre
The Munich Olympics had been designed to show the world a peaceful, democratic West Germany, deliberately contrasting the Games with Adolf Hitler’s 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Security was intentionally unobtrusive.
Then, before dawn on September 5, eight members of the Palestinian militant organization Black September entered the Olympic Village and attacked the apartments housing the Israeli delegation.
Two Israelis were killed during the initial struggle. Nine others were taken hostage.
For hours, much of the world watched the crisis unfold live on television.
A poorly planned West German rescue attempt at Fürstenfeldbruck airfield ended disastrously. By the end of the night, all nine remaining Israeli hostages were dead. Five of the attackers and West German police officer Anton Fliegerbauer were also killed.
The Olympics stopped briefly.
Then they continued.
But for Israel, Munich did not end with the closing ceremony.
Israel’s Response
Prime Minister Golda Meir faced a question that governments would repeatedly confront in the decades that followed:
How should a country respond when the people responsible for an attack are scattered across borders rather than positioned behind a conventional military front?
Israel chose to pursue those it believed had planned, organized or supported the Munich massacre.
The resulting campaign became widely known as Operation Wrath of God.
Israeli intelligence tracked suspected Black September operatives and associates across Europe and the Middle East. Some were killed by gunfire, others by explosives.
The strategy established an enduring message:
Distance and international borders would not necessarily protect those Israel believed responsible for attacks against Israelis.
But the campaign also demonstrated the danger of secret intelligence operations.
In Lillehammer, Norway, in 1973, Israeli agents mistook Moroccan waiter Ahmed Bouchiki for Palestinian operative Ali Hassan Salameh and killed him as he walked home from a movie with his pregnant wife.
The mistake became an international scandal—and a permanent warning about the consequences when lethal intelligence is wrong.
A LIFE Magazine Cover That Became History
More than fifty years later, Munich remains part of the debate over terrorism, retaliation and the limits of military force.
The September 15, 1972 issue of LIFE captures the story at an extraordinary moment.
The Israeli delegation is still marching.
The flag is still raised.
The athletes are looking forward.
They cannot know what is about to happen—or that their deaths will influence Israeli security policy for generations.
That is one of the remarkable things about old LIFE magazines.
Sometimes they do more than document history.
They capture the instant before history changes.
